Sign with your new employer

If you’re leaving to take another job, make sure you definitely have the other job – that means both you and your new employer have signed a contract and you have a start date.

Check your contract

Make sure you’re giving the appropriate notice. If this will affect your start date, call your recruiter immediately to troubleshoot.

Write a resignation letter

Your resignation letter should be concise and to the point – it’s not the place to air your greivances.

Dear (insert name of Manager),

Please accept this letter as my formal notice of resignation from my current position of XYZ (insert current job title) at XYZ (insert Organisations name), effective immediately.

I have accepted an offer from another organisation and would like to take this opportunity to thank you for allowing me to be part of a fantastic team at XYZ (insert organisations name). The associations I've made during my employment here will truly be memorable for years to come.

As per my contract, I am giving you XYZ (insert number of weeks here) weeks of notice and my last day at work will be (insert date here). If I can help to train my replacement, please let me know.

Again, thank you for the opportunity to work with a great team at XYZ (insert Organisations name).

Schedule a meeting

Be professional about your resignation. Schedule a meeting with your manager (and don’t tell the whole office before you tell them).

Write down your reasons

Your manager may ask why you’re resigning. Have your reasons written down and be professional about sharing them. Your reasons may include wanting to work on different kinds of projects or seeing career progression somewhere else.

Prepare your desk

It’s common practice for employees in some companies to be walked off the premises immediately after they resign. Ensure all of your work equipment is in the office. Clear all personal data from your mobile phone, tablets, and computers. Have your personal belongings already removed, or, if this is not possible, have a bag handy to pop them into.

Stay cool

If your employer takes your resignation personally, you don’t need to react. Remain calm and professional. If you are uncomfortable say, “I can see this has come as a shock. I’m going to go back to my desk now. Perhaps we should discuss this again tomorrow.” Give them your letter and leave the office.

Be prepared for a counter offer

Consider what you will say if your current employer offers the same package as your prospective employer. Keep in mind that if you decide to stay, you’re going to have to let down your new employer.

Keep performing

Perform your duties to the last day. Not only is it the right thing to do, this is a small industry and your reputation is valuable.


Enjoy your last day drinks with the team, still remaining professional. (There’s no need to let your colleagues know what you really thought of them, chances are you’ll cross paths again soon enough).
